Hello All, just to let you know - Art Space Gallery is open for business again, after one of the fastest refurbishments ever! The premises are looking clean and fresh, everyone has moved around a space and used the opportunity to bring in some new work. Why not pop in and see for yourselves? Inka Gallery is a non-profit artist run co-operative promoting Tasmanian contemporary art. It aims to provide a supportive environment for emerging artists and to offer members an opportunity to display, exhibit and sell their artworks. Good Friday Opening

Opening hours for Good Friday at Art Space are 12 noon - 5.30 pm and normal hours of opening (10 - 5.30 pm daily) will resume from Saturday.

Unfortunately John - who was due to work at the gallery tomorrow - broke his arm yesterday (it's his painting arm as well) so is out of commission for a while. Sara has kindly agreed to stand in for him but owing to prior commitments cannot start until noon.

Art Space is open!

We opened up the gallery again last week after refurbishment. The exterior is not pristine though, as the continued assault of wet, salt laden air has caused the large window frame to rot to such an extent that the whole thing needs replacing - a temporary repair has been effected for now!

January 2011 - midwinter - really?

Photos taken today, 19 January 2011, in the vicinity of Art Space, on The Wharf, St Ives, Cornwall.

What a special day, beautiful from start to finish and for those of us lucky enough to be in the area, a chance to make the most of bright, warm sun despite the cold air. The door stayed open at Art Space Gallery all day!

The gallery will be closed from Monday 24 January - Thursday 3 February for its annual 'wash and brush up'.

We have a vacancy for a new member and are very sad that Victoria Hilliard is leaving - so those of you who love her work, pop into the gallery now, because she will be departing within the next three months. A talented artist and such a valuable team player - we are going to miss this girl!

So much time has passed between posts - sorry - life has been hectic, certainly not dull. St Ives is very busy now that the school holidays are here and the sunshine today saw many happy families enjoying the fine weather and making the most of the beaches.

Art Space Gallery was busy too, with lots of favourable comments received and appreciation shown. Thank you to all who buy from us, we are very grateful for your patronage!

The next big event to look forward to locally is the annual St Ives September Festival which runs from 11 - 25 September this year, click here to go to the Festival website.

Talking of websites, the Art Space website needs some loving care at the moment, having been targeted by 'malware'! The web host has cleared the infection, so that's not a problem, but the action resulted in the removal of all our images and now it's my job to reinstate them. I will post here when the site is back to normal. Have a good week everyone.

Art Space Gallery a decade on!

Art Space Gallery celebrates ten years from its launch on March 25, 2000. The founder members of Art Space all originated from the St Ives women’s artist group called ‘Taking Space’. This was and still is a group of women artists who exhibit together around Cornwall.

One of the members at that time, Greta Brett, suggested that we should have a permanent gallery of our own as we always seemed to be putting up and taking down exhibitions. Another member, Sue Sefton, organised the lease and formalities, obtaining a small unit in Court Arcade, St Ives. Any member of Taking Space who was interested formed the original group and Art Space Gallery evolved with eight members, opening for business on April 13, 2000.

Before the end of the first twelve months, the membership had reduced to seven and seven has remained the preferred membership ever since. By the start of 2003, moves were afoot to find a larger exhibiting space and the group moved to its current location on The Wharf, opening in time for Easter of that year. After the move the members agreed that Art Space was an artists co-operative gallery as opposed to an organisation for women artists only and Mike Hindle became the first man to join the group in February, 2007.

Rules for running Art Space are laid down in a ‘Constitution’ which governs everything from times of opening and care of the gallery to treasury, finances and hanging spaces. Included among the aims listed in the Constitution are: ‘A commitment to art, the gallery and each other’, ‘To develop teamwork as a co-operative’, ‘The development of each person’s work’, ‘To share experience in order to achieve our potential’, ‘To keep up a standard and bring a freshness to each re-hang’, ‘To be unique.’

Art Space Gallery can look back on some testing times, none more so perhaps than during the second half of 2009, when four long term members departed. The three remaining members, Helen Atkins, Victoria Hilliard and Lesley Ninnes were promptly joined by Truro based Sara Pound and Cornishman, John Berryman. In November, Petroushka Sura-Field joined the co-operative and the arrival of Gwinear based Julian Rowe, in January 2010 returned the group to ‘full strength’.

The tally of artists who have contributed their energy and expertise to the development of Art Space, whilst each enjoying the opportunity to reach a wide audience for their sizeable body of personally selected work at various times during the past 10 years, number twenty two in total! It is left to the current membership to celebrate reaching this important milestone, while bearing in mind the efforts of all of those who played a part in making it happen, and to look forward to the next chapter in the history of Art Space Gallery, St Ives.

Back to full strength!

It's great to be able to report that we are 'back to full strength' at Art Space Gallery with the arrival of member no.7 - Julian Rowe.

Always painting as a boy, it was natural for Julian to follow his deep interest in art. Julian paints in oils and concentrates on landscape and figurative subjects, usually set in local surroundings, often gardens.

He uses a generous application of paint because of the rich, sumptuous quality that this can convey, even with the brushmarks themselves.

He almost always tries to give a sense of a painting being part of a scene or story, as if there has been a build up to the moment depicted and there will be a continuation.

A proportion of his present work comprises studies of wildlife.

Winter opening hours are 11 am - 4.30 pm, seven days a week. Pop in to see us, there's always an artist present to discuss the work on show.

A Sunny View

It's possible to see (click to enlarge) that people are enjoying the sun - maybe it was taken during the spring or possibly September/October time rather than at the height of the summer, as there are no swimsuits to be seen and no one in the water!

It's that time of year again!

A new year has dawned and it's time to give Art Space its annual facelift - a nice clean & brush up & lick of paint is called for in readiness for the forthcoming season! So the gallery will be closed from tomorrow, Monday 11 January until Thursday 21 January inclusive, with apologies for any inconvenience caused. Having said that, it's always possible to arrange studio visits to any of the artists during closure, just make contact via our website or blog.

Plus, ta-dah, we have recruited our 7th member and are looking forward to being 'back to full strength' when the gallery reopens. Watch this space in the next week or so to find out who that new member will be!

We are delighted to welcome Petroushka Sura-Field to Art Space, as its 6th member.

Originally from Chile, Petroushka works with glass and metal to create wonderful wall hangings, platters and sculptural jewellery.

Petroushka says of her work. "A large part of my inspiration comes from my interaction with the natural world as well as emotions, spirituality, and life. I work with different techniques such as kiln-formed glasswork, lampworking (beads), slumping, electroforming with copper, casting, jewellery and mixed media. Working in these different ways I create a great variety of panels, plates, decorative objects, sculptures and jewellery."

Wind of Change at Art Space

Regular readers may have noticed our ad (below) and I can report that, as of 25 September, there has been major change at Art Space with the departure of some long standing members and the arrival of two new artist members!

For Sara Pound the Millennium was a moving year - she came to Truro along with husband, 3 children & Flossie the dog. In 2001 she took up life-drawing, along with pastels and watercolours, and joined artists group 'Taking Space' which allowed her to exhibit work all over Cornwall, while also enjoying good company and the exchange of ideas. Now she's at the threshhold of what we hope will be a long and fruitful association with Art Space Gallery.

Cornishman John Berryman is a former teacher and gallery owner. Since moving back to the county he has been hugely influenced by the Penwith landscape, particularly the coastline, and the work of the early Newlyn and St. Ives painters. He likes to paint in his small St. Ives garden, and uses enhanced colour and texture to communicate the feeling that this little plot of land evokes. Look out for John's unique views of St Ives now on display at Art Space.

Tardy blogger

Well, I have to write something, so much time has passed since the previous post. The trouble is, I spend so much time reading the fascinating accounts of others that the Art Space blog is neglected!

I'm feeling a bit miffed at the moment if the truth be known - if you recall (there's even a photo) we were delighted to have an 'A' board giving passers by and visitors interesting information about the gallery and us.

Well, the sign is now languishing in the Art Space store-room as we've received a threatening letter from Cornwall Highways telling us to remove the sign or they will do so without further notice and charge for storage!!

I'm aware that the presence of A' boards in St Ives is a contentious issue but, for heaven's sake, ours was situated very close to the gallery window and, as can be seen from the photo, prevented from being an obstacle by the presence of the tables and chairs used for 'al fresco' eating by the Beachcomber Restaurant next door! Oh well, rules are rules I suppose, bah!!

Anyway, have also - to compensate for the moaning - included a nice photo of the 'Foresand' and harbour viewed from Wharf Road, or 'The Prom' taken on a bright, sunny day in August 2008. Bye for now.

Our 'Artists Palette' window exhibition continues until Sunday 12 July inclusive. We've got a new 'A board' too!

We used a restricted palette of colours for this theme: Prussian blue, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium yellow and white. Christine Allen's lovely painting sold almost immediately and also before I got around to taking a photo!

I had to do it, had to go back - with a camera this time - to see if the van with stained glass windows was still there and as you can see it was! Have cropped the photos to hide the number plate, as I don't know how to make it go all 'blurry'. (Bet Menopausal Musing does)

Quick blog

Yes, it will have to be a very quick blog because there's still so much to do, when all I really actually want to do is go to bed and read, or maybe have a go at Codeword or Suduko. These long days find me leaving everything until the last minute - tonight I couldn't resist walking the dog around 'The Island' again because, although very cold, the sky had cleared, there were a few wispy clouds and everything was bright, sunny and blue.

Going and returning I was 'tickled' to pass an old forest green painted van (like a Bedford but think it was a Dodge) which looked normal from the front but had a planked wood rear with stable doors complete with a lovely little stained glass window, with another smaller stained glass window to the side! Oh for a camera, why didn't I take it?

Tomorrow, hopefully I'll be posting paintings sent by Art Space members for exhibition at the Clare White Gallery, Barnsley. Talk to you then. BFN.

Because I saved this post originally as a draft last Thursday, it appears below Sunday 7 June despite having been completed today (Monday 8 June) - sorry if this causes confusion! Anyway, the images above include some black & white paintings by Angela for the current Art Space black and white themed window exhibition and paintings by Ges and Christine which will be shown at the Clare White Gallery, Barnsley from 12 June 2009. Open Studios Cornwall

It's that time of the year again, when artists in Cornwall throw open the doors to their studios, from 23 - 31 May, 2009. Black & White window exhibition at Art Space

As promised, photos of our Black & White themed window. I had some difficulty getting these today because of major scaffolding works going on next door and trucks and vans parked all over the place, the day was bright too, so there's a lot of reflection - which really pays off in the above pic.

Anyway, these images give some idea of what can be seen.

Black & White theme

Our new window exhibition opened today at Art Space Gallery and the theme is 'Black & White'. While the subject matter is open, members were required to confine their black & white creations to 12" square deep edge canvases. I haven't seen the gallery windows yet - apparently they 'are quite something'. Thanks go to Chris and Annie for all their hard work in hanging the window show.

Please visit the blog again in the next few days, because we hope to have some images uploaded soon.

Coast Dining - delayed opening

Hope no one's been along to Coast yet as it's not open!!!

At our monthly Art Space meeting this morning, Annie and Christine reported back on their visit to Camden and showed us photos of the interior of Coast and the artwork, now in situ. Their trip was hard work but enjoyable - they have made lots of new friends at Coast - but they informed us that the opening has been put back by a few days.

As far as we know, the Grand Launch is still scheduled for 19 May 2009 and hopefully, Coast will open to the public before this. Will keep you posted. BFN.

Coast

Soon I'll be able to post photos of the paintings that we are sending to 'Coast', in the meantime please enjoy the beautiful flowers in the above photo - luscious colours.

Coast is an exciting new restaurant to be opened in Camden Town, London. Family links to St Ives have been a key inspiration behind the ambition to bring a little piece of the coast to the city and the menu will focus on fresh seafood, with crab, oysters and fresh fish featuring strongly.
Non seafood lovers will be catered for with a choice of vegetarian, chicken and beef dishes.

The design of the restaurant will feature artwork from Art Space Gallery all of which will be for sale. Layout will be modern and the atmosphere contemporary, with music featuring strongly as a backdrop to the dining experience." Sounds good doesn't it!

Monthly re-hang

The monthly re-hang is all done and dusted, with each of us moving our work in the gallery to the next space 'on the left' (clockwise). The accompanying photo shows a mirror image of a previous show at Art Space.

We've decided to keep the window exhibition going - 'Boats - 7 Perspectives' to give us time to produce artwork on the next theme, 'Black & White'. We aim to create at least two works per artist on 12" square deep edge canvases for the window, in time for the next re-hang on May 18 2009.

We're also busy finishing paintings for exhibition at 'Coast' a new seafood restaurant scheduled to open in Camden, North London, in May - more about that later!

The accompanying photo is another 'candid camera' type shot by Keith Johnson taken between Christmas and New Year when I was making the most of the sun to clean the gallery windows. His photographer's eye has picked up the 4 primary colours, maybe that's why I find it so cheering, does it make you smile?

Look at the colour of that water! This was the view from Art Space Gallery yesterday (Sunday). Today the weather in St Ives could not have been more different, with heavy rain for most of the day. Happily the rain stopped eventually and the sun even made a late appearance.

Something to do with the hour going forward?

Something to do with the hour going forward? Or maybe that's just an excuse, whatever the reason, the Art Space blog hasn't been added to for a while.

It was my turn to work in the gallery today and, apart from a couple of sun showers early on, our corner of the harbour was a sun trap, with lots of famillies enjoying being on the sand, on the water or strolling past looking at the view and of course, visiting Art Space.

Because of 'swaps' I'm also going to be working in the gallery again tomorrow, so will try to remember to take the camera and photograph 'Boat' paintings not included on the blog so far - pieces by Chris, Annie and Tori. Please return for a look in a couple of days when hopefully all will have been uploaded!

Lastly, I have set up my own blog. It's called 'Sea-Blue-Sky & Abstracts' http://sea-blue-sky-abstracts.blogspot.com There's not a lot to see yet, but please take a look - I'll be thrilled if you follow as I don't even have one follower so far. Oh the shame!

New Exhibition at Art Space Gallery

If you are in the area from next Monday 23 March, 2009, please take a look at our window display featuring new paintings on the theme 'Boats (7 Perspectives)' for which each artist will produce two paintings, 10" square, specially for the window.

Inside, the monthly rehang sees us all move on to the next gallery space (in a clockwise direction) providing an opportunity to introduce new work or different combinations and styles.

As there are no boat images available yet, I decided to include this photo of a family enjoying early sunshine sitting on the The Wharf, taken from within Art Space just a few days ago. Spring is on its way! Sunshine makes the 'Credit Crunch' so much easier to bear!
